But unlike other sites, here at Silent Hall of Fame you can make a real difference. You can help us show for the first time many films featuring your favorite silent stars that have not been seen in generations. This will bring their names back into the public discourse. But you can do much more than that: you can help your favorite silent stars receive belated recognition and glory.
Until now there has never been an organization with the purpose to place a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for movie personalities from a century ago. Silent Hall of Fame is this historic organization. Silent Hall of Fame is the only organization of its kind. We will make history and we invite you to become a part of history by sponsoring a silent movie star for the Hollywood Walk of Fame. All contributions are tax deductible.

Help needed to translate Dutch, German and Russian titles into English
We request the help of bilingual users. We have in our possession rare films made in the USA that have been preserved in foreign archives and do not have English titles. If you are fluent in any of the above languages and in English and would like to make a contribution to Silent Hall of Fame, please contact us.
Please Help Us Find These Films
These are all films that we haven't been able to track down, but they have user ratings in IMDB and/or are known to have been in distribution, so the assumption is that they exist somewhere in private collections. If you have a video file or a DVD, or a VHS, or 8/16/28/35 mm with any of these films, please share it with us so that we can show the film to the silent movie lovers of the world. You will make a valuable contribution to Silent Hall of Fame and will help one of our silent movie stars receive belated recognition and glory. We will give you a credit for your contribution by stating your name for all to see, with special thanks. In addition, if you send us an original copy of the film as a donation, you may be able to reduce your taxes on your next year's tax return.
It is worth noting here that only because a particular film has user ratings in IMDB that doesn't mean that it exists, or that it has been seen in the last few decades. Such is the case with The Big City (1928) and London After Midnight (1927), both starring Lon Chaney and Marceline Day. The last known copies of both films were lost in a MGM fire in 1967. However, it is possible that these two and many other films may still be found in private collections.
It is also possible to find rare films locally. Please visit your neighborhood video store that offers classic and silent films, take the List of Rare Films with you and check if they have any of them available. If you are able to locate any of these rare movies you will make a valuable contribution to Silent Hall of Fame and help your favorite silent movie star receive better recognition. We will give you a special thanks and post your name for all to see and admire.
Here are a two examples of why we believe that many of these films can be located:
1/ a 16 mm or 8 mm film of The Way of the Strong (1928) was available in the 1970ies and 1980ies from a company called Kit Parker Films. So for a period of time it was in circulation and people did buy it. This is why we believe that with the help of our users we can find this film.
2/ 16 mm or 8 mm films of The Wife's Relations (1928) and The New Teacher (1922) were available in the 1970ies and 1980ies from a company called Mogull's Films. We hope that someone will share these films with us.
Of course, you can also contribute any other silent films featuring our stars, which we currently don't stream and are not listed on this page. We would also welcome films featuring other silent personalities, especially those movies that have survived only in private collections and have been unavailable to the public. As far as the films that we stream are concerned, if you have film copies with better quality than the ones that we have on the site, please share them with us.

Silent Hall of Fame is a young and energetic nonprofit organization, which runs this website for the public benefit and in the public interest. We have very limited volunteer staff, but serve users around the world.
Silent Hall of Fame is unique. It is the only place where we actively work to bring the names and legacy of formerly illustrious, but unrewarded with proper recognition silent stars back from oblivion and strive to bring them belated fame and respect. We also fight for your right, the right of the public, to see silent masterpieces that have been kept in hidden vaults for far too long. We have located hundreds of films featuring our stars that we want to show you for free on our website.
To cover our minimum expenses for rent, utilities, servers, website maintenance and support, gas, postage, office supplies and various fees we need about $15,000 annually.
We further need funding for our program expenses such as movie acquisition fees, copyright check fees, access fees and transfer fees. We need your generous support to bring out into the open and show to the public many silent films-masterpieces that are available in archives around the world and wait to be reconnected with the classic film lovers after many decades. Some films cost a few hundred dollars, others cost thousands of dollars - you can find examples in the pages "What We Do" and "How You Can Help".
We also need funding for our ultimate goal - to place a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the stars of Silent Hall of Fame. We do believe that they deserve this recognition for their outstanding contributions to the Motion Pictures industry, the country and the world. Each nomination currently costs $30,000, which is the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce fee. Again, we are all volunteers, we do not get paid salaries but give our hearts out to bring belated recognition to these amazing silent stars.

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the legacy of our stars we seek to recover their rare films from archives in the USA and round the world. We are happy to report that as a result of our extensive research we have found hundreds of films featuring our stars. All these films are waiting to be reconnected with the public after many, many years. Most of the movies have not been seen by any silent movie lovers for three or four generations.
You can help us acquire these films and show them on our website with your tax-deductible contribution. This will help your favorite silent movie personalities receive better public recognition, and in the future, improve their chances to get a nomination for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Because none of these films are available for viewing anywhere else, this will also help your favorite website, Silent Hall of Fame, become really unique in the quest to bring back from oblivion the names of your favorite silent movie stars.

In case some of you are wondering why some reviews have films but other don't, here is an explanation:
1/ we cannot show you those films that are lost or destroyed, probably forever. In these cases we show you in a slide all available stills that have survived, and include whenever possible, contemporary reviews of the films telling details about what actually happens. Examples of such lost films are "The Big City" (1928), "The Barrier" (1926), "The Boy Friend" (1926), "The Road to Romance" (1927) and many others.
2/ we cannot show you those films that although surviving and available are still copyrighted. Examples of such films are "The Wind" (1928), "Captain Salvation" (1927), "He Who Gets Slapped" (1924), "The Smart Set" (1928) and many others.
3/ we cannot show you those films that although surviving are unavailable, because companies and institutions keep them locked. Examples of such films are "Rookies" (1927) and "Detectives" (1928), which Warner Bros. keeps locked in a vault and refuses to give us a copy, and "College Days" (1926), which is locked in UCLA.
4/ we cannot show you those films that although surviving are unavailable, because they exist only in the form of the original reels and transferring them to a DVD costs a lot of money. Some are abroad and some are in the USA. Here is just one example: Holland has the film "Under The Black Eagle" (1928). They have a nitrate film and want 6,000 Euros ($8,000) to make a DVD copy.

We have started work on a short documentary. The purpose of the film is to let the public know about Silent Hall of Fame and its efforts to restore the legacy and bring belated recognition to distinguished silent film personalities who have not been rewarded with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
We envision this film as the initial step that will bring the mission of Silent Hall of Fame to a broader audience and gain more supporters. We intend to create a longer professional quality documentary in the near future, as soon as the necessary funds become available.

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the legacy of our stars we seek to recover their rare films from dusty archives in the USA and round the world. We are happy to report that as a result of our extensive research we have found about 200 films featuring our stars. All these films are waiting to be reconnected with the public after many, many years. Most of the movies have not been seen by any silent movie lovers for three or four generations.
You can help us acquire these films and show them for free on our website with your tax-deductible contribution. This will help your favorite silent movie personality to receive better public recognition, and in the future, improve its chances to get a nomination for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Because none of these films are available for viewing anywhere else, this will also help your favorite website, Silent Hall of Fame, to become really unique in the quest to bring back from oblivion the names of your favorite silent movie stars.

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the legacy of our stars we seek to recover their rare films from dusty archives in the USA and round the world. All these films are waiting to be reconnected with the public after many, many years. Most of the movies have not been seen by any silent movie lovers for three or four generations.
You can help us acquire these films and show them for free on our website with your tax-deductible contribution. This will help your favorite silent movie personalities receive better public recognition, and in the future, improve their chances to get a nomination for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The UCLA will not make this, or any other film available to us as we hoped. The UCLA has instituted a policy of charging $5,000 for any feature film that they have in their possession. You can help bring silent films out of archives, where they have been kept for generations away from the classic film lovers, by signing THE PETITION TO THE UCLA.

Our initial search for lost or unavailable films included 30 titles from the last 5 years of the Silent Age (1925-1929). We have considerably narrowed down the unknowns. These are the results that we can report:
- We know that a firm in Paris, France has a nitrate copy of the film The Wall Street Whiz (1925). We don't know if we will be able to buy a copy and show it on our website, because they only mention "serious amounts of money", without quoting a number.
- We know that the British Film Institute has Fools of Fashion (1926), but refuses to make a copy for us. We don't know if we will be able to buy a copy and show it on our website. We have asked the Library of Congress for help to repatriate a copy of this film. We have also asked our users to help us by writing to the Library of Congress.
- We know that The Dutch Film Institute has the film Under The Black Eagle (1928). They have a nitrate film and want 6,000 Euros ($8,000) to make a DVD copy. We don't know if we will be able to obtain a copy and show it on our website. We have asked the Library of Congress for financial help; if we don't receive such assistance, other priorities may prevent us from paying such amount of money for one film.
- We know that Warner Bros. has another critically acclaimed film - Rookies (1927), but they refuse to make a copy for us, although they don't intend to release a DVD to the public. We don't know if we will be able to acquire a copy and show it on our website. We have asked our users to help us by writing to Warner and urging them to either release the film on DVD or license the film to Silent Hall of Fame so that we can show it on our website.
- We know that Warner Bros. has another film - Detectives (1928). Same story as for Rookies (1927).
- We know that the Library of Congress has the film The Jazz Age (1929), and they are ready to make a copy. We don't know when we will be able to buy a copy, because undetermined copyright issues with Warner have blocked the process. The cost to buy a copy and show it on our website will be around $1,200. You can help us achieve this goal with your tax-deductible contribution.
- We know that the Library of Congress has the film Trent's Last Case (1929), and they are ready to make a copy for Silent Hall of Fame. The cost to buy the film and show it on our website will be around $1,200. You can help us achieve this goal with your tax-deductible contribution.
Apart from finding these 9 films, we obtained information about other films, which clarifies what is available and what is not, and corrects wrong information in the FIAF database and other sources about these films.
- Freedom of the Press (1928) - Italy has only the trailer.
- The Road to Romance (1927) - New Zealand has only 16 seconds of opening titles. We also know that Warner does not have any footage available of this film.
- The Big City (1928) - UCLA has only the trailer.
- Stolen Love (1928) - the Library of Congress had it listed as available in their archive; upon our inquiry it turned out that that listing was a mistake.
- London After Midnight (1927) - we know that Warner does not have any footage available of this film.
- A Certain Young Man (1928) - we know that Warner does not have any footage available of this film.
- A Single Man (1929) - we know that Warner does not have any footage available of this film.
Thus, we were able to obtain information about 17 of the 30 films in our initial research - a 57% success rate.
We have a strong and resourceful team, which is constantly finding new ways to find lost films and bring them to you, the user, absolutely free. Just recently our Vice President came up with a brilliant idea, which, when realized, will enable Silent Hall of Fame to show you another forgotten masterpiece free on our website.
We believe that we are on the right track, because our efforts for finding lost films are bringing results. We have asked you, the users, to help us with suggestions which other films not available on DVD you would like us to look for in domestic and international archives. We have also asked you, the users, to help us with your financial support so that we can continue our mission and bring more silent masterpieces from the forgotten vaults to the public, where they belong.
